Winifred E. LaPlant, 94, Minneapolis, passed away Saturday, June 13, 2009 at the Good Samaritan Society – Minneapolis.
Winnie was born October 14, 1914 in Wells, Kansas, to Edward and Marjorie (Bailey) Weaver. After she graduated from Minneapolis High School in 1932, she was accepted to the Fred Harvey Restaurants with the Santa Fe Railroad in Barstow, California. She worked there until her marriage with Leo LaPlant on October 30, 1935. To complete their family, Leo and Winnie adopted two children, Brenda and Jerry in 1951. Thirty years of their married life was spent on the farm in Ottawa County until moving to Salina, Kansas in 1965.
Leo preceded her in death on February 4, 1993 after 57 years of marriage.
Winnie was a homemaker and an Avon representative. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and she was also a charter member of the Quilting Circle. Winnie was also a member of the Moose Lodge, V.F.W. and American Legion Auxiliaries, Cancer Survivor Group, TOPS, and she was a Meals on Wheels volunteer.
Survivors include her children, Brenda Kline and her husband Larry of Delphos, Kansas and Jerry LaPlant and his wife Lois of Salina, Kansas; eight grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 A.M., Wednesday at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Minneapolis. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Minneapolis. Visitation will be from 2 P.M. to 8 P.M. Tuesday at Wilson Shields Funeral Home where a prayer vigil and rosary will be at 7:00 P.M. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or Hospice Care of Kansas and may be left in care of the funeral home.
