Silena M. Berigan, 78, died December 3, 2011 at the Butte Healthcare Center. She was born August 25, 1933 in Vernon, Texas, the daughter of Henry Franklin Herring and Claudia Mae Parks. She attended nurses training at the Vernon hospital and earned her Licensed Vocational Nursing (LVN) degree. Around 1962 she moved to Kansas with a close friend. She continued her nursing vocation at the hospital in Salina, KS, for many years. She was a loving caretaker to many during her lifetime.
On April 11, 1968 she was united in marriage to Stephen James Berigan at the Antioch Baptist church in Ada, KS. They resided on a farm at Culver, Kansas. One daughter, Tresa Lynn, was born. After leaving the farm, they moved to Ada, KS in 1979.
Silena was a member of the Antioch Baptist church in Ada. She enjoyed the ladies mission circle and their activities. She also participated in several bowling leagues in Salina and in Minneapolis,KS.
After the death of her husband, Jim, she moved back to Texas in 1989 to be an in-home caregiver. She remained there until she moved to Burwell, NE, in 1993 to be close to her grandson. She lived there until September of 2010 when she moved into the Butte Healthcare center close to her family.
Survivors include one daughter: Tresa Garwood and husband, Byron of Spencer, Nebraska; four grandchildren: Braden, Kaitlyn, Connor, & Mattie Garwood all of Spencer; two sisters: Jean Close of Vernon, TX and Sharon Robertson of Graham, TX : also three stepsons and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jim; three brothers: William "Bill" Herring, Vernon "Buddy" Herring, and Hershell " Perk" Herring; one sister: Velma Vickers; her parents, and a stepdaughter.
Funeral Services will be Thursday, December 8 at 10:30 A.M. at Antioch Baptist Church, Ada.Burial will be in the Fairview Cemetery,Ada. Visitation will be Wednesday December 7th from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at the Wilson Family Funeral Home in Minneapolis KS. The family suggests memorials to the Butte Healthcare Center or The Antioch Baptist Church.
