Ronald L. DeWitt, 69, Beverly, Kansas, passed away Wednesday, July 29, 2009 at the Ottawa County Health Center, Minneapolis, Kansas.
Ron was born July 25, 1940 in Glasco, Kansas to George and Florence (Johnson) DeWitt. He served in the United States Air Force. Ron was united in marriage with Charlene Flaherty on October 20, 1961. He was a retired police officer and was currently serving on the Beverly City Council. Ron and Charlene also ran the Minneapolis Country Club restaurant for numerous years. Together, they served as foster parents for 13 years fostering 350 + children. His love was his family; especially his grandchildren and his cats and dogs.
He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Florence; brother, George and his sister, Virginia.
Survivors include his wife, Charlene of the home; his daughters, Terri Dewitt and Kara Lariviere of Beverly, Kansas, Cindy Scarbrough and her husband Jerry of Minneapolis; and Rhonda Bell and her husband Chris of Beverly; his siblings, Dorothy Tebow of St. Joseph, MO, Donna Wiseman and her husband John of Cedar Vale, KS, Doris Gobert and her husband Ray of Hot Springs, AR, Barb Dean and her husband Chuck of Beverly, KS, Marge Bailey of Lee's Summit, MO, Cheryl Ryg of Minneapolis, KS; Bill DeWitt and his wife Carol of Minneapolis, and Gary DeWitt of Lincoln, KS; his sister-in-law, Virginia DeWitt of Scott City, KS; grandchildren, Tabitha, Alisha, Christina, Casey, Seth, Rose, Amber, and Sarah; his great-grandson, Liam; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 A.M., Saturday at Wilson Shields Funeral Home, Minneapolis, with Pastor Kaye Metzler officiating. Visitation will be from 2 P.M. to 8 P.M. Friday at the funeral home where the family will receive friends from 6 P.M. to 8 P.M. Burial will be in the Beverly Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or the Salina Animal Shelter and may be left in care of the funeral home.
