Obituary

Robert "Bob" Otto Behrendt, son of Otto and Paulina (Markley) Behrendt, was born August 10, 1923 in Minneapolis. He passed away Monday, April 1, 2013 at the Ottawa County Health Center, Minneapolis at the age of 89.


Bob graduated from Minneapolis High School in 1941. He entered the United States Army in February 1943 and he served until February 1946.

Bob was united in marriage to Maxine Marie Parker on April 9, 1944. They lived in Minneapolis their entire married life. Bob returned from the service to resume farming and retired in 1995. In 1953, he and Maxine managed the Minneapolis Hatchery until 1962. He worked for Handy Motor Company during the winter months for 10 years. Bob was a member of the American Legion and the First Presbyterian Church. He served as a city councilman from 1955 to 1957 and again from 1985 to 1993. He also served as Mayor of Minneapolis from 1993 to 1999.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Florence Meiller.

Survivors include his wife Maxine; son Jim Behrendt and his wife Gloria and daughter Karalee Austin and her husband Tom all of Minneapolis; five grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and two step-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 2:00 P.M., Saturday, April 6 at the First Presbyterian Church, Minneapolis. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 P.M. to 8 P.M. Friday at Wilson Family Funeral Home, Minneapolis where the family will receive friends from 6 P.M. to 8 P.M. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church.
