Richard E. Smith, 66, Bennington, passed away Wednesday, September 4, 2013 at his home with his family at his side. He was born May 31, 1947 in Ottawa County to Raymond and Alice (Hilleary) Smith.
He was a 1965 graduate of Salina High School and Brown Mackie College. Richard served in the United States Army during the Vietnam Conflict from 1967-1968. On August 23, 1969 he was united in marriage with Connie Lour in Salina.
Richard was a truck driver for Graves Truck Line and most recently UPS where he retired from after 41 years of service in 2012.
He was a member of the Church of the Cross in Salina and the Mack Million Mile Club.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents and infant sister, Betty Lou.
Survivors include his wife of 44 years, Connie; daughter Tammy Smith; son Jason Smith and his wife Kathy;; grandchildren Amanda Sue Bolte, Brandon Bolte and his wife Jessica, Justin Bolte, and Alex and Mathew Smith; sisters Thresa Lee and her husband Von and LaDonna Steffen and her husband Bruce; brother Charles Smith and his wife Sue; sisters-in-law Barbara Long and her husband Luke and Sharon Helm and her husband John; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be at 11:00 A.M., Saturday, September 7 at the Wilson Family Funeral Home, Minneapolis. Burial will follow in Walnut Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 P.M. to 8 P.M. Friday at the funeral home where the family will receive friends from 6 P.M. to 7 P.M. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Salina and may be left in care of the funeral home.
