Richard Marvin Ballou, 83,Glasco, passed away Thurs., Sep. 11, 2008 at his cabin northeast of Glasco.
The son of Louis M. and Essie M. (Bourne) Ballou, he was born Apr. 24, 1925 on the family farm north of Delphos.
He served in the U. S. Navy during World War II. He worked in Soil Conservation for Ottawa and Decatur counties until becoming a technician for the Northern Great Plains Agricultural Experiment Station at Mandan, ND in 1967. He retired in 1988 and returned to the Delphos-Glasco area.
Richard was a member of the National Rifle Association; a past president of the Kansas State Rifle Association; a past vice president of the North Dakota Shooting Sports Association and was inducted into the North Dakota Sports Hall of Fame. The Rich Ballou Kansas State Junior Muzzle Loading Championship was named in his honor. He taught hunter safety and marksmanship classes for many years and was a member of the Prairie Long Rifles.
Survivors include a son Marvin Ballou and his wife Marie of Minneapolis; two daughters, Susan Ballou of McPherson and Marilyn Heck and her husband Joel of Minneapolis; a brother C. J. "Cork" Ballou of Delphos and 5 grandchildren, Laura Heck Baker of Killeen, TX; Mark Heck of Wichita; Megan Ballou of Manhattan and Jade and Tanner Ballou of Minneapolis.
The funeral will be at 10 A.M. Wed. at the Wilson Shields Funeral Home, Minneapolis with burial in the Delphos Cemetery with military honors. Memorials St. Labre Indian School, Ashland, Montana 59004-1001. Visitation will be from 2 to 8 P. M. Tues. at the funeral home with the family present from 6:30 to 8 P.M. The casket will remain closed.
