From the time Oliver Max Constable was three years old until his death Sept. 25, 2013, he fished and explored the outdoors in the area along Vine Creek north of Bennington, Kan. Born March 2, 1917, in Peabody, KS, he stretched his activities in the wild world until weeks before his death at age 96.


He was the last surviving of four brothers and sisters in the family of Mary E. Horn and Marshall Constable.


In his early years Constable was a construction worker and a radio performer for KSAL out of Salina. He wooed his future wife, Maxine D. Nelson of Tescott, Kan., with guitar and harmonica music, and after their marriage Oct. 17, 1942, continued impromptu musical fun with son Stephen Kent of Phillipsburg, Kan., and grandsons Kent Constable of rural Minneapolis and Scott Constable of Phillipsburg. He extended his interests to his grandkids' and great-grandkids' escapades.

Most of his adult career was with the State Highway Department in Minneapolis. After his retirement, he developed an interest in woodcarving, often exhibiting wildlife and caricature pieces at Rock City and in the surrounding area.


He is survived by his son Stephen and wife Vicki Werts Constable; grandson Kent and wife Tamara and their sons Lawson and Kenedy; and grandson Scott and wife Janna, great-granddaughter Ashley, and bonus great-grandchildren Trenton, Daria and Damon.


Funeral services will be at 10:30 A.M., Saturday, September 28, 2013 at the First Presbyterian Church, Minneapolis with Pastor Michele McHenry officiating. Burial will be in Bennington Cemetery. There will be no visitation. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church.
