Obituary

Melissa Jean (York) Nelson, 61, of Minneapolis, Kansas, passed away Sunday, October 18, 2026, following a courageous six-year battle with cancer.

Born July 25, 1965, in Junction City, Kansas, Melissa was the daughter of John York and Susan McWilliams. She was raised in Junction City before eventually making Minneapolis the community she proudly called home.

Melissa possessed an extraordinary capacity for love and compassion. She had a gentle heart that embraced everyone she encountered, extending her kindness even to the smallest creatures, like her precious weenie dogs whom she loved dearly.

Her generosity knew few limits, and her unmistakable, one-of-a-kind laughter reflected the pure and beautiful spirit within her. To know Melissa was to know unconditional love.

Throughout her life, Melissa worked primarily as a commercial cook, as well as a Certified Medical Assistant and retail salesclerk. Even while battling cancer, she continued working at Gene's Heartland Foods until just three months before her passing, when the pain became too great.

She remained determined to enjoy life, visit familiar faces, and stay connected to the Minneapolis community she cherished so deeply.

Melissa was preceded in death by her mother, Susan McWilliams.

She is survived by her beloved husband, Robert Thomas; her father, John York; her children, Jennifer Felten, Dustin Williams [and spouse, Erick Williams], Chris Williams [and spouse, Whitney Williams], and Nick Williams; and her beloved grandchildren, Chloe, Aiden, Gage, Codi, Lorelai, Brayden, Jenna, Preston, and Easton Williams; and brother COL (ret) Brent York .

Melissa’s legacy is not defined by the illness she endured, but by the boundless love she gave, the lives she touched, and the laughter that will forever echo in the hearts of those who knew her.

She loved without condition, gave without expectation, and lived with a heart that never stopped caring.
