Mary Jean (Black) Pierce took a journey with Jesus to heaven on Sunday, July 25 2010. She was a resident of the Ottawa County Health Center Long Term Care.
She was born October 28, 1927 in Ashland, Kansas to John W. and Florence (DeVore) Black of Englewood, Kansas. On June 1, 1949, she was united in marriage to Nathan L. Pierce in Norton, Kansas. Jean was employed as a cook at the Ottawa County Health Center for many years. She was a member of Hall Wesleyan Church. Jean earned the nickname "Bag Lady" for the love of painting and the many canvas bags painted for friends and family. She was a staunch KU basketball fan who did not bleed purple.
Jean was preceded in death by her husband Nate on December 18, 2001 and her daughter Rebecca Kawai on May 20, 2010. She was also preceded in death by her siblings Ruth, Helen, and Don.
Survivors include her children Susan Drummond and her husband Tony of Minneapolis and Shawn Pierce and his wife Sherry of New Cambria; her son-in-law Leighton Kawai of Waiane, Hawaii; her grandchildren Kaena Kawai and his wife Odessa, Kaimi Kawai, Kanoa Kawai and his wife Kehau, Kanani Kawai, Dylan Pierce and his wife Lindsey, A.J. Pierce, Alyssa Stebner and her husband Scott; and her nine great-grandchildren Tehani, Taylor, Dahrius, Mariska, Halia, Keala, Huali, Mackenzie, and Casey.
Memorial services will be at 10 AM Thursday at Wilson Shields Funeral Home. Visitation with family will be from 5 PM to 7 PM Wednesday at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to the Ottawa County Health Center Long Term Care and may be left in care of the funeral home.
