Mabel Jane Johnson, 82, Delphos, died Monday, February 12, 2018 at Salina Regional Health Center. She was born August 25, 1935 near Miltonvale to Vernie and Vivian (Klein) Gawith.
Mabel Jane was a 1953 graduate of Delphos High School. She and Gerald F. Johnson were united in marriage on September 19, 1954 in Delphos. She was a member of the Delphos United Methodist Church.
Mabel Jane was lovingly known as "mom to many". She nurtured her own four children, was foster mother to more than a dozen children, and informally adopted many more.
Mabel Jane was Aunt Janie to numerous Gawith and Johnson nieces and nephews as well as children from the neighborhood and church.
One of Janie's favorite roles was grandma. She adored her six grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and the slew of youngsters who considered her grandma.
Janie demonstrated her love for others in many ways but particularly with food and crocheting. Baked goods and homemade meals were delivered to many a friend. Numerous loved ones in the area have afghans she made. Janie's practice was to pray for the person as she crocheted. For an average size afghan, the recipient received about 100 hours of prayer.
Janie's role of a lifetime was wife to Jerry. They celebrated 50 years of marriage before he died on November 24, 2004. The Johnson children are certain Jerry was standing on their heavenly mansion's porch to welcome her home. Their children are also certain after a wonderful reunion Janie started telling Jerry how she wanted it remodeled.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Jerry; and siblings, Jake, Oakley, and Lawrence Gawith.
Survivors include her children, Pam Leiker, Doug Johnson, Mike Johnson, and Lori Sisk; foster children, Suzie Schrater and Dennis Richter; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; brothers, Leroy and Kenny Gawith; sisters, Deloris Pachta and Kathryn Paige; and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.
Funeral services will be at 11:00 A.M., Saturday, February 17 at the Delphos United Methodist Church. The family asks that if Mabel Jane ever made you an afghan that you bring it to the service on Saturday. Burial will be in the Delphos Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. Friday at Wilson Family Funeral Home, Minneapolis, where the family will receive friends from 5-7:00. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Mabel Jane Johnson Memorial Fund.
