Gladys Mayree Mangus, 97, Minneapolis, passed away Friday, July 8, 2016 at the Ottawa County Health Center, Minneapolis. She was born April 24, 1919 in Liberty Township, Geary County, near Dwight, Kansas. Mayree was the only child of James Calvin and Gladys Mayree (Spangler) Mangus.

The family moved to Ottawa County in November of 1932 and she graduated from Culver Grade School and Culver High School. Mayree taught school for six years in rural schools and two years in Ada. During those years, she attended summer schools at Fort Hays Teachers College and Kansas Wesleyan and took college correspondence and night courses. The family moved to Minneapolis in May of 1942. She was very faithful to her parents and cared for them until their deaths. James passed away in 1952 and Gladys in 1985.

Mayree was the Assistant City Clerk for eight years and then Ottawa County Deputy Clerk for five years. In 1959, she became the City Clerk of Minneapolis. She was known for her hard work and dedication to the city of Minneapolis. Mayree retired in 1986 after 27 years of service. After retiring she traveled extensively. Mayree loved animals, especially horses and cardinals.

While working as City Clerk, she met a young Todd Wilson. He would take his parent's utility check in every month and an instant friendship was formed. Mayree took him in as her own. Todd and Mayree spent many hours together and he became the child she never had. Years ago she composed a list of 100 things they did together. This included attending concerts, taking trips, celebrating graduations, portraying Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus, and many hours of phone conversations just to name a few. One of her highlights was when he and Shelly were married in 1998. Mayree welcomed Shelly in with open arms and she gained another child. Their children, Landon and Reece became her pride and joy. She also gained another family when she went to live at the Ottawa County Health Center in Minneapolis in 2006. The staff cared deeply for her and always went above and beyond.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Minneapolis for 70 years. Mayree was a past member of the Kansas State Teachers Association, City Clerks and Municipal Finance Officers of Kansas, and the International Institute of Municipal Clerks.

Mayree is survived by her family, Todd, Shelly, Landon, and Reece Wilson of Minneapolis; her Ottawa County Health Center family; and some cousins.

Visitation will be from 2:00 to 7:00 P.M. Tuesday, July 12 at Wilson Family Funeral Home, Minneapolis. Funeral services will be at 10:00 A.M., Wednesday, July 13 at the First United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Minneapolis. Memorial contributions may be made to the Ottawa County Health Center and may be left in care of Wilson Family Funeral Home, P.O.
