George Loyal Long, 91, died Sunday, May 30, 2010. He was born May 11, 1919 in Lincoln County, Kansas to Ralph and Rena (Crawford) Long of rural Lincoln.
He attended grade school at Lost Creek School and graduated from Lincoln High School George was a World War II veteran where he was wounded in the line of duty. While on tour George saw General Douglas MacArthur in person and from his speech. George liked it and repeated thorough out his tour MacArthur's quote, "I shall return". Upon returning home George joined the V.F.W. He was a farmer/stockman, managed Rock City at Minneapolis and was employed at Waters True Value in Salina until his retirement.
George loved fishing, dancing, farming, cleaning, lawn work, gardening (always had good tomatoes), and camping where he would cook/grill like crazy at the lake. With grandchildren in tow they would do chores (feeding cattle) and go to the roller skating rink. Cooking for the grandchildren resulted with one enjoying deep fat fried mushrooms a little too much. Wherever the grandchildren went, George would follow with camera in hand and ready to catch you unaware or posing. So smile - his camera is ready!
He was preceded in death b y his parents, two brothers, and one sister. He is survived by his wife, Barbara; three sons Don, Paul, and Larry; two daughters Mary and Sarah; three brothers Richard, Ike, and Dean; one sister Peggy; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be at 10 A.M. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Franklin Cemetery with military honors. Visitation will be from 9 A.M. to service time at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Salina and may be left in care of the funeral home.
