Obituary

Duane Lee McKain, 87, of Minneapolis / Delphos, KS passed away on September 6, 2023, in Topeka, KS.

Duane was born on May 18, 1936, in Minneapolis, KS, and attended school in Delphos; graduating in 1954.

As Duane grew up, he started playing baseball at an early age with several family members. All of the cousins and their fathers would get together and play other teams for local benefits. As

the fathers got older, the kids would take over. Many of these games were in cow pastures. It was considered "special" when these teams got to play on a field with dugouts. In July 2016, Duane had the privilege of throwing out the starting pitch for the NBC World Series in Wichita, KS.

After high school, he attended a vocational trade school in Milford, NE. Upon completion, he worked at Sid Bacon Motors in Salina, KS before moving to Delphos, KS to take up farming. After several years of farming, Duane purchased a gas station in Glasco, KS, and operated it for several years. This was sold and he became the manager of the Delphos Cooperative Service Station, where he worked for several years, later purchasing the farm fuel delivery service from Co-op. He delivered fuel to local farms for many years.

He married "the love of his life" Maxine (Parks) on June 1, 1958, in Delphos, KS. They were married almost 60 years before she passed away in 2018.

An important part of Duane's life was fishing. When not working, he was often fishing with friends and family.  It was not uncommon for local townspeople to honk as they drove by the Delphos home on their way to the lake. Trips to North Dakota became a yearly opportunity for several townspeople to spend a week fishing in the northland. His son (Randy) and grandson (Corban) would join the group for this week of fishing. One of his last requests was simply; one more fishing trip.

He was preceded in death by his wife: Maxine (Parks) McKain, and parents, Virgil (Jeff) and Esther (Smith) McKain.

He is survived by his son Randy (Mishele) McKain of Bemidji, MN, and daughter Renee (Geoffrey) Peterson of Milford KS, grandchildren, Joshua McKain, of Berlin, Germany, Bethany (Richard) Anderson of Bemidji, MN, Corban McKain, of Bemidji, MN, Amber Peterson of Manhattan, KS, Brooke Peterson of Junction City, KS, and Roman Peterson of Milford, KS. He was also the great-grandfather of three, Layney, Sadie, and Ezra Anderson, of Bemidji, MN.

A graveside service will be held at 10:00 A.M. on Saturday, October 21 at the Delphos Cemetery. A meal will follow at the Bohemian Hall in rural Glasco, Kansas. Memorial donations may be made to the Bohemian Hall or the Delphos Volunteer Fire Department and sent to Wilson Family Funeral Home, P.O. Box 166, Minneapolis, KS 67467.
